AUCKLAND SESSIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, June 15. At the Supreme Court Harold Raymond Bates for indecent assault was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention; Harold Bruce Anderson, for false pretences with previous convictions for cheque swindling, five years’ reformative treatment; Thomas Hamilton, alias Butler, a Maori, for theft from a dwelling was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment; Claude William Batt, for theft from a hotel was given two years’ probation; Harold Melville Taylor, for theft of two rings from a" jeweller was fined £200; and Ralph David Matthews and William Kelly, for theft, breaking and entering were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. In the .case against William H. M. Taylor, wlio admitted the theft of two diamond rings, Mr. Justice Stringer said that he hesitated to accept the recommendation by accused’s counsel, who stated that his client was wealthy and had no need to steal, that the case be met by the imposition of a substantial fine, but as the probation officer had reported favorably he would agree to making the fine £2OO, such as would probably impress accused that honesty is the best policy.
