The following officers of the Public Service have been nominated as candidates for election to the vacancy for the elected member of the Public Service Board of Appeal: Messrs. E. I’. Hawthorne (Department of Justice, Wellington), J. H. Irvine (Government Printing Office, Wellington), A. L. B. Jordan (Audit Department, Christchurch), J. M. Kelly (Valuation Department, Christchurch), Mr. H. R. Spence, of the Customs Department at Dunedin, was also nominated, but he has now withdrawn. THE RABBIT PEST. Dunedin, June 15. At Naseby, before Mr. Lewy, S.M., John Fenton was convicted a third time for failing to destroy rabbits and was fined the maximum penalty, £lOO with costs. HOSPITAL MATRON’S DEATH. . Wellington, June 15. As the result of the inquest held into the death of Miss Lindsay, late matron of the Grey town Hospital, the coroner returned a verdict that deceased met her death by strangulation, selfinflicted while mentally affected. David Sutherland, clerk employed by the Defence Department, pleaded guilty to embezzling £lO5- Accused received money for goods made by men undergoing vocational training and failed to bank it all. He had got into difficulties owing to gambling on horse races. He was committed for sentence. PONS-WINNEOKE COMET. Wellington, June 15. This morning at 3.30 the Pons-Win-necke comet was observed at the Hector Observatory by Mr. A. C. Clifford, who subsequently reported the fact to the Government Astronomer. The comet was at that time near, and on the western side of the Star XI. Pegasus and moving rapidly south-east. It will to-night be on the east side of the star. This is the first view of the comet obtained in New Zealand.
