ONE BIG UNION.
SHEARING WORKERS’ SCHEME. WORKERS’ UNION DISCUSSION. By Telegraph. —Press Association Wellington, Last Night. The sixth annual conference of the New Zealand Workers’ Union opened today. In welcoming the delegates the retiring president (Mr. Arthur Cook) said the conference was the most. important yet held. Referring to the unemployment problem he impressed upon delegates the extreme gravity of the situation. The shearing industry had considered the scheme outlined in Sydney in March relating to the formation of one big union throughout Australasia and it should be heartily endorsed by the conference. The industrial situation was critical in New Zealand and Australia and any further delay in the realisation of the scheme would have fatal consequences. In regard to the dispute with the sheep owners he said that if the union could not get justice in the Arbitration Court or by agreement, it would be necessary for all members to enforce the claims on a job conference and set up a committee to meet one representative of the Alliance of Labor and discuss proposals for affiliation -with that body. The conference adjourned pending the result of the meeting.
