OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) There lias been very satisfactory competition for the contracts advertised by the Town Board for the hydro-electric works. The successful tenderer for the big works—dam, tunnel and race*—is not made known, but it is generally reported that a Stratford firm is the successful tenderer. The dam, or ‘‘hold-all,” will cover about 15 acres. When the work is completed it should make an ideal swimming bath, and a popular place for holding aquatic sports. It is stipulated that the work is to be completed within six months from date of signing the contract. The hydro-electric power board for this district is expected to be gazetted within a month. The Opunake schoolboys journeyed to Awatuna on Saturday, and yere victorious at football by 8 points to 3. The Pihama school is expected to be one of the strongest teams in the southern division. The Town Board agreed to forego all charges for hall hire in connection with the Seaside Carnival. The Opunake junior team is the first team in this division to Jet a football match go by default. They forfeited last Saturday to Alton. Mr. Chas. Fea ver, who has been farming on the Opua Road for many years, has sold out his intercsa to Mr. Ashworth. Mr. Feaver has bought a farm in the Stratford district. A farewell was given Mr. and Mrs. C. Feaver last Friday evening at Air. Oliver Cross’ residence. It is reported that a new grocer contemplates opening up in Opunake The Eltham Pipe Band was engaged here on King’s Birthday in the interests of the Maori Queen candidate. During the day a miniature Caledonian gathering was held. On Wednesday evening the Maoris of the district showed Mr. G. M. Cleghorn practical recognition of his heroic services in assisting to save the lives of two Maoris in the recent boating fatality at Oaonui. An address was presented. being accompanied by a silver cup, gold medal (suitably inscribed), and a gold-mounted greenstone pendant. Mrs. Cleghorn was presented with an oak stand ink well. On behalf of the Maoris, Mr. T. S. JI i ekey made the presentation, whilst a number of Maoris added their remarks of gratefulness to the recipient. Mr. ('leghorn briefly returned thanks. This week concludes the seaside carnival festivities. A Stratford player was ordered off the field by the referee in the Opunake match.
