MAIN ROADS BILL.
IMPORTANCE TO TARANAKI. LOCAL BODIES’ ATTITUDE. Speaking at yesterday’s meeting ofi the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association at Eltham, Mr. C. J. Belcher, chairman of the Eltham County Council, said he wished to draw members’ attention to. the Main Roads Bill. He said the Bill was going to affect Taranaki more di« rectly than any other part of New Zea«< land. “We in Taranaki,” he said, “havd been progressive and have made good roads, and if the Bill is passed we will be’ in the position of helping to pay for roads in those districts that have lagged behind.” Mr. Belcher said that he feared that the allocation of money expended under the Bill would' be subject to political influences. Ho regretted that drafts of the Bill had not been circulated among members so that it could be freely discussed at once.
A unanimous wish was expressed by the meeting to have drafts of the Bill circulated, and it was eventually decided to ask the Taranaki members of Parliament to secure copies of the Bill at the earliest opportunity, so that the matten could be fully discussed at a later meet* ing. *
