DOMINION CENSUS.
POPULATION OF 1,216,974. GROWTH Oi xuJj ISLAND. FASTER THAN IN THE SOUTH By Telegraph—Press AMoelatlot, Wellington, Last Night. The first preliminary count of the census is now complete and shows that the Dominion has increased in population since October, 1916, by 117,525. This increase includes many thousands of returned soldiers who were alill abroad in 1916. A much greater ratio of increase is shown in the North Island, particularly in the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty districts. In 1916 the North Island (in* eluding camps, etc.) possessed 59 percent of the population, as against 41A per cent in the South Island, but tha ratio now is 61 per cent in the North| Island as compared with 39 per cent the South Island. H is pointed out by the Government; Statistician in the letter in which hqj conveys these facts to the Minister of internal Affairs that the figures haveU )>een compiled from the returns made by the local census enfimerators, and HJ follows therefore that they are subject?, to errors in compilation and errors in. transmission, etc. The final compute* tion must await the completion of the checking of schedules, which will probably require another six weeks. The following table gives details of the preliminary count, Maoris being exoluchq ed:— Males. Females. Total. North Island 381,380 357,291 738,67 V South Island 240,716 237,587 478,303 Totals ... 622,096 594,8781,216,974 The total increase in the North Island since October, 19JG, is given ast 86,599, or 13.5 per cent, against 29,926 M or 6.7 per cent in the South Island. Included in the 1916 figures were 8724 per-, sons in military and internment camps, all of which were in the North Island. The allocation of these to their respective islands would raise the ratio of ins crease in the North Island and lowei} that of the South' Island.
