AUSTRALIA v. CAMBRIDGE, SECOND DAY’S PLAY. * HARD TASK FOR CAMBRIDGE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 3, 7.5 p.m. London, June 2. The weather was summery, the wicket perfect and the attendance was seven thousand for the second day’s play of the match between Australia and Cambridge University.
Cambridge made £2O and when stumps were drawn on the first day's play Australia had lost three wickets for 107Andrews and Pellew resumed to the bowling of Gibson and Marriott, and the scoring soon became fast. Andrews gave a chance to Mcßryan shortly after starting, which was refused; He brought up his fifty in sixty-four minutes. Pellew reached the half-century in fortyfive minutes, hitting a sixer off Marriott. The partnership added a hundred in fifty minutes. At fifty-seven Pellew gave a chance to Lowry. At 163 Dpggart, a fast right-hander, displaced Gibson and the new bowler scored, getting Andrews leg before.—4/177. Ryder followed. Pellew at 76 gave another hard chance to Claud Ashton, off Doggart. The second century was hoisted in two hours. Gibson replaced Doggart. Ryder was then run out as the result of a smart return by Gilbert Ashton. Armstrong partnered Pellew, who at 93 was again missed by Gilbert Ashton] His century was posted in eighty-five minutes. Armstrong gave two chances. At seventeen Doggart dropped him and again missed him at twenty-nine. A third chance was fatal, Chapman snapping him up in the slips. —6/299. Two runs later Pellew was bowled playing back to Marriott. His innings lasted 130 minutes. He hit a sixer and twenty-one fours, showing fine and crisp batting all round the wicket. Hendry and Oldfield were lively and carried the total to 358. Mailey and McDonald went cheaply at the end of .the day’s play. The Mailey-Oldfield-Ryder combination played havoc in Cambridge’s second innings, whose weakness was due to the absence of a number of good players owing to ■examinations. Hillwood and Mcßryan opened well against McDonald and Hendry and scored fifty in fortyfive minutes. Ryder replaced McDonald, and at fifty-one Mailey bowled, vice Hendry. At fifty-three, off Mailey’s first ball, .Hillwood gave Mayne an easy catch. At sixty Mailey, jumping up, caught Mcßryan off his own bowling. Then the wickets went fast. Mailey secured four in four overs for eleven runs. The resistance generally was feeble and the sixth wicket fell for 100, which had taken a hundred minutes to compile. Claude Ashton shaped well. Hubert Ashton is unlikely to bat. Details are: AUSTRALIA. First Innings. Total (for 7 wickets) . 11l Experts are calling attention to the University batting against the Australians and assert that the young amateurs seem to defy the Australian bowlers better than most professionals because they are not terrified by big names.
