MILITARY BALL.

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION. That the annual ball run by “A” Company Xlth Regiment, New Plymouth, has gained a popularity extending right throughout the province was shown by the very large attendance of patrons at the' third annual function held in the Coronation Hall last night, visitors being present from all parte of Taranaki. It was estimated that the attendance totalled over one thousand persons, and it was a very gay throng which . participated in the ball. There was a representative gathering of officers of, the regiment, and the mess uniforme of 1 blue, together with the service dress of khaki, were conspicuous < features. The hall was profusely decorated, and i the transformation secured by the dis- ; tribution of bunting and greenery was i remarkable for its picturesqueness. At various corner* of the hall shrubbery was arranged with effect, which was heightened by the protruding muzzles of a couple of guns, shown up by colored lights. Overhead there was a profusion of flags and electrical decorations, and all bore evidence of the careful preparations for the function carried out by the committee. One of the annexes had been laid out a* a supper room, and here too the decorations were a feature. Colored streamers were arrayed in festoons from the ceiling, and the tables were also tastefully set. Catering arrangements were very admirably carried out by a ladies’ committee, which provided a splendid repast, and the thanks of the ball committee is due to them for their work in this department. The grand march was led by Lieut.* Colonel E. P. Cox (officer commanding the regiment) and the Mayoress (Mrs. F. E. Wilson). Officers present included Brigadier-Genera'l Meldrum, Lieut.*!
