TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Great Northern Steeples to-day. Concluding days at Wingatui and “Otaki. Barring accidents Kauri King will win a race shortly. ■ The imported horse Callaghan is said to be a bobby-dazzler I A number of Bulls sports went across to Greytown yesterday to back Master Richmond. Stetson has qualified with the Rangitlkel Hunt, and has only to keep on his feet to win a race shortly.
Tamo Fox was backed for pounds, shillings, and pence at Otaki yesterday. He was a “full book” with Kinsem.
If Ngata gets beaten in tte Great Northern Steeples the flags will be flying at halfmast in Murton to-night.
St. Simon (12.12) and Liberator (12.9) hold the weight-carrying honors in the Great Northern Hurdles. Nowadays such weights would cause owners to baulk at the acceptance list.
El Gallo won the Great double twice, and others that have won both races are Liberator and Loctella. Levanter and Kiatere rank ::s double winners of the big steeplechase.
Percy Johnson's tally in the Great Northerns will always bear recounting. He won the hurdle race on Mutiny, Cavalier and Battleaxe, and the big -steeples on Jenny, Muscatel, Dummy and Kiatere. The horsemen of the present day are not a patch on Percy 1
Gloaming’s two-year-old brother, Lightning, was given his first run at Canterbury Park (Aus.) recently, and finished fourth. Like his illustrious brother, Lightning Is a goodlooking bay, with a Roman nose. The Australian Jockey Club’s winter meeting opens at Randwick to-day, when the A.J.C. Hurdle Race will be run. Sandule was awarded top-weight (11.12) in the race, and the New Zealanders weighted Included Silent Way 11.5, Paddington Green 11.0, British Arch 10.12, Forward Lady 9.12, and Kiliowat 9.2.
The Australian Steeplechase will be run on Monday. Sir Prim (12.7) was top-weight, and Tararu Jack 11.12, Paddington Green 11.7. and Forward Lady 10.5 amongst those weighted. At one time New Zealand owners cast longing eyes at the big stakes offered in 'Stralian jumping events, but nowadays much bigger money awaits leppers in this Dominion.
Loyal Irish figures amongst the entries for the First Nursery Handicap (5% furlopgs), and the Second Nursery Handicap (7 furlongs), at the A.J.C. winter meeting. If Loyal Irish can hold his own with the two-year-olds likely to be met with at Randwick he will prove himself a much better colt than his performances in public here suggested.
Wonder how the army of Taranaki sports ’attending the Great Northern meeting this year will fare. Last year the majority of them "wen| broke,” but those that weathered it out had no reason to regret the trip. Only one first favorite (Lochella) scored on the opening day, and none at all on the second. The final day saw punters right on the spot, no less than six favorites—Oakleigh, Deviation, Hyllus, Slowcoach, Mill o’ Cowrie, and Royal Abbey—and one second favorite (Tama-a-roa) being first, past the post. It was a great recovery 1 There is hardly an offence committed hi New Zealand nowadays that certain newspapers do not put down to gambling, and invariably horse racing is blamed. The other day u well-known Wellingtonian pleaded guilty to robbing the Government of some thousands of pounds, and the same old stock phrase, "Gambling on the racecourse” was trotted out again. A careful perusal of the evidence discloses the fact that this person stofe money for his own personal pleasures, and when ti e LU-gotten amount had passed beyond the limit of repayment or of loans, he turned to gambling as the only means of retrieving his hopeless position. But Dame Fortune never smiles on such persons—outside of ihe pages of a novel— and this dying flutter on the racecourse only added fuel to the fire. Racing had no more to do with i this man’s downfall than It had to do with os.-Adam, - -
