SCHOOL COMMITTEE. June 2. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held last night. Present: Messrs. C. D. Sole (in the,chair), E. G. Foster, G. Smart, W. Abraham, W. Pinhey, D. M. Clarke and E. A. Alger. The headmaster (Mr. F. Tyrer) reported: During the month the average attendance in the primary school has been normal —568 out of a possible 634. The attendance in the High School has Hieen good, 170 being present dally out of a possible 181. A winter school for teachers was held in the ’ Technical School from May 9to 20* The tertn holidays for, the High School pupils were extended to two Weeks so that the Technical School buildings would be available for the teachers’ use. The cocoa scheme has been working since the 17th inst. Mr. Clark will place before you recommendations dealing with it. Seats .around the new building are the most essential requirements. The caretaker's work lias been greatly increased of late by stoppages in the proper working of the lavatories —stoppages that seem purposely about. I suggest your asking for the assistance of the police. MisS Field, who is now employed in the Invercargill Technical College, has accepted the position of commercial instructress in this school, and will arrive early this month. 1 sincerely hope that no more changes in the staff of the school will take place this year. Classes from the East Road schools, which have been coming in for manual and science work, made their last attendance yesterday for tlic first part of the year.x The classes. will be resumed on September 8. The children have done good work. It was decided that the headmaster be advised that the school be opened by the National Anthem each morning in the class-rooms and that when weather permits the flag be saluted. The finance committee, was instructed to arrange for holding a-concert on a date following the social. The secretary of the Education Board notified that the board would not pay for the fruit-acid powder used in toothbrush drill. The caretaker reported that children were first served with cocoa on May 17. The stove and hot-water service are working well. The following tariff for cocoa tickets was decided on: Where there is one child in the family receiving cocoa. 12 tickets for Is; two children, 13 tickets; 3. 15; 4, IS; 5, 24.
• GENERAL. The pupils of the Stratford School were assembled in front of the school to-day at one o’clock for the purpose of saluting the flag. Mr. C. D. Sole, act-ing-chairman of the school committee, briefly addressed the children, stating that they were assembled to tender loyalty to their King and to the Empire, of which they formed a part. Tht?e cheers were given for the King and the flag'was saluted, the children, singing a verse of the National Anthem. In Stratford during May rain fell on seventeen days, the total fall being 9.09 inches, half of which fell on two days2»54in on the 7th and 2.62 in on the 26th. The only other considerable falls were: .55in on the 23rd, .7in on the 24th. .54in on the 27th, and .59in on the 28th. Proceedings at the ball to be hold by the Senior Cadets’ companies In the Town Hall to-morrow (Friday) night,
will open at 8 o’clock with. a grand march. The ball is .in aid of funds for
the holding of a sports meeting, and patrons will be enabled to help a worthy cause and at the same time spend a very enjoyable evening. The Stratford Sports and Pastimes Club has arranged a match between two of the leading professional featherweights of the Dominion, to be fought at the Stratford Town Hall on July 12. Five amateur bouts will also be included on the programme.
The Midhirst Football Club have, definitely postponed their dance owing to the uifficulties of arranging a satisfactory date. KING’S THEATRE TO-NIGHT.
