LABOR M.P.’s AND UNEMPLOYED. Christchurch, Last Night,.

In the course of their reply to Sir Francis Bell, the Christchurch Labor members, Messrs. Howard, Sullivan, and McCombs, say: “You have made no attempt to justify the Government’s action in putting forty experienced men off the public works on the Okatarawa Road, and within a few weeks engaging thirty more men for the same work at a reduced rate of pay. You have not tried to justify, or even explain, the Government’s action in paying men 10s a day, despite the fact that the Arbitration Court award rate is 16s a day and despite the important fact, too, that your Government is committed by an honorable agreement with the New Zealand Workers’ Union, signed by Mr. Holmes, the late Engineer-in-Chief, and endorsed by the present Engineer-in-Chief (Mr. Furkett), and also by the Minister in charge, to pay labourers on public W’orks rates ranging from Is 104 d to 2s 3d per hour.
