(From Our Own Correspondent.) May 31. The local retailers report that business generally on Friday and Saturday morning was eveftly spread. It was generally expected for at least a few weeks that the shops would be •’ushed all Saturday morning, but a good many country people were in town on Friday, which left Saturday a comfortable morning for business. The Returned . .Soldiers’ Association decided at a meeting on Friday last to hold their annual ball in Messrs. Hatrick and Co.’s warehouse on July 7 and 8. Instead of the usual house-to-house canvass for supper provisions, committee have decided to purehfise it. Mr. Fowler’s orchestra has been engaged.
On Saturday a. young Maori girl named “Babs” Adlam, whilst dodging one motor car, ran into 'another, driven slowly by Mr. Woisin, at a crossing in McLean Street, and was knocked 6ver, the wheels passing over her legs. .Mr. Woisin drove the. girl to the hospital. On Sunday morning after Mass, the Rev. Dean McKenna, on behalf of the .congregation, lianded to Mr. Gribbon a gold-mounted fountain pen and to Mrs. Gribbon a prayer book. The gifts wore a small token of appreciation before they leave for a trip to England. Messrs. Zimmerman and Dean also entertained Mr. Gribbon at their residence and an enjoyable evening was
spent. An ivory manicure set was presented to Mrs. Gribbon and a case of pipes to Mr Gribbon. Mr. Gribbon and family leave by the mail train of Thursday morning to join the lonic, which sails on Friday. Dr. Allison has arrived in Waitara.
