INGLEWOOD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) May 31. A smoke, concert, complimentary to the councillors representing the north riding of the Inglewood County was given at Lincoln Road School on Friday, May 27, when in spite of threatening weather there was a muster of between 30 and 40. Unfortunately Cr. G. Capper, of Kaimata, was unable to be present. being laid up with a severe cold. His apology tendered to the gathering, was accepted with regret and expressions of sympathy. His colleague, Cr. J. Hunter, therefore had to shoulder the whole burden of representation for the riding. Air. A. Corkill, county chairman, and Mr. A. B. Gamlin of Inglewood, were amongst the visitors. Mr. E. J. Ible presided.

The first toast was “The King,” which duty fulfilled., the whole party sat down to supper and soon the somewhat informal programme of the gathering was in full swing and was kept merrily going. The toast, “The. Army and Navy,” given by Mr. IL Sander, and responded to with equal modesty and brevity by Messrs. A. L. Winter, E. Wallace, R. Rattenbury and G. Elliott (returned soldiers) was quaffed with musical honors, as was each succeeding toast. “The Dairy Industry/* by Mr. C. FL Owen, was responded »to by Mr. Ible in a really excellent exposition of the dairyman’s point of view. “Graziers’ Interests,” by Mr. J. F. Young, evoked replies from Messrs. Gamlin and H. Sander. The latter, being a wellknown bachelor, brought the house down by saying, in most doleful style, that the grazing business had been so bad of late that he had had "tb turn his kids to the blackberries (it is well-known his goats this year have been prolific). “Local Bodies,”’by Mr. E. R. Metcalf called forth a grateful acknowledgment from Cr. J. Hunter, of Waitui. The intervals wore enlivened by pianoforte and mandolin solos by >tr. F. Julian, who also treated the meeting to a song, as did Messrs. E. R. Metcalf. E. O’Callaghan and W. P. Brash.
