TE ROTI—OPUNAKE RAILWAY
DESIRE TO HAVE MORE MEN EMPLOYED. The following telegrams have passed between Mr. Dixon, M.P., and the Minister for Public Works:— “Minister of Public Works, Wellington.—Six men going Whangamomona public works. Can you arrange for men out of work from here to work on Te Roti-Opunake line. .Some of men—returned soldiers—take strong exception at having report to Sergeant of Police, Stratford. They say they are not vagrants. Why can they not report to Public Works Department?—E. Dixon, M.P.” “E. Dixon, Esq., EEawera.—Have received your telegram regarding employment of men on Te Roti-Opunake line, aud will be pleased to give representations made my early consideration.-—J. G. Coates.” Mr. T. 8. Hickey, secretary Opunake Railway League, has sent the following letter to Mr. E. Dixon, M.P.: ‘T am directed to forward to you the following resolution passed at a public meeting held at Opunake on the 26th inst., and so solicit your valuable assistance in having this work expedited:: I “That in order to stimulate production, relieve the County of Egmont of the present heavy burden of road upkeep, and remove stagnation, this meeting urges the Government to adopt a more rigorous policy regarding the construction of the railway from Te Roti to Opunake. and that the meeting request the Government to give consideration to the matter of ffndfog work for theg unemployed on the formation work of I the line from Kapuni to Opunake.”
