REFORMATIVE DETENTION. Napier, Alay 30. Henry William AlcKay, aged 17, was sentenced by Mr. Dyer. S.M., to three years’ reformative detention on charges of indecent exposure and false pretences. THE McLEAN INSTITUTE. AVaimate, Alay 30. The death occurred at her residence, Waimate this morning of Mrs. J’hillips, who, during her life had an income of £3OO per annum under the will of the late John McLean, owner of Waikakahi Station, taken over by the Government 25 years ago under the closer settlement scheme. Mrs. Phillips’ inepme now reverts to the Christchurch Home for Indigent Ladies, known as the AlcLean Institute. Deceased was McLean’s housekeeper at the Valley homestead for many years. Iler benefactions here have been frequent and large.

HOSPITAL BOARD CLAIM. Auckland, Alay 30. The Hon. C. J. Parr announces that the Government has appointed Mr. Poynton, S.M., to act with Air. E. E. Collins, Auditor-Genera], to investigate the claim of the Otago South Hospital Board for a share of the property of the latter to the value of £41,000. The commissioner will take evidence at Dunedin and report to the Governor-General, who will then issue an Order-in-Council. CHARGES OF FRAUD. Wellington, Alay 30. The case against George* Churchill and Alexander .Joseph Chisholm, head timekeep and assistant time-keeper for the. coal department of the Union Steamship Co. of conspiring with certain persons unknown to defraud the company of £165 Gs lOd was continued to-day. Accused were committed for trial. UORD JELLICOE AT HAMILTON.

Hamilton, May 30. The i Governor-General arrived this morning and visited the Waikato Hospital. His special object was to.see the returned soldier patients. He was given a great reception. There was a public reception in the afternoon on the river bank. The weather was beautiful and there was a largo crowd. The Mayor (Air. J. R. Fowl presented Lord Jellicoe with au illuminated address amid much enthusiasm. Lord Jellicoe afterwards was taken on the river for a trip. He will be entertained at afternoon tea on the golf links, and at dinner to-night. He will open the Winter Show tomorrow. SOUTHLAND CENSUS FIGURES. Invercargill, Last Night. The census returns for Southland County and Stewart Island County are: Europeans, males 26,222, females 24,828, total 51,050, an increase of 2080 over last census; Maoris, males 161, females 119, an increase of 230, which is largely accounted for by the recent census being taken during the mutton bird season. The Invercargill suburban area population is 2162, and Greater Invercargill 19,200.
