A VERDICT REVERSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, at the hearing of the case against Franklin John Smith, charged with rape, or, alternatively, indecent assault, the jury, after 3% hours’ retirement, brought in a> verdiet of not guilty of rape, but guilty of assault. Prisoner will be sentenced to-morrow. Accused was convicted on the major count in June last, and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, but an application for a re-trial on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence was granted by the Court of Appeal.

DUNEDIN SESSIONS. Dunedin, May 26. Mr. Justice Sim granted a decree nisi in the theatrical suit Joan Patrick, actress, v. Jerome Patrick, actor, on the ground of desertion.
