ANARCHY AT ALEXANDRIA.

RISING OF NATIVES INCITED.

SHORTAGE OF TROOPS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Received May 27, 12.45 a.m. London, May 25. Casualties at Alexandria were 30 Egyptians and 14 Europeans killed, 1.30 Egyptians and 69 Europeans wounded. An inflammatory leaflet wan discovered inciting natives to rise and kill Christians.

The Daily Express correspondent at Alexandria reports complete anarchy prevails. Business is at a standstill, shops, law courts, and customs office closing. Owing to the inadequacy of the numbers of British troops the Egyptian troops and mounted police have been placed under British iontrol, the local police being untrustworthy. The Italian Consulate confirms the report of many atrocities, including the burning of a European alive after being drenched with petroleum.

Influential residents have sent a request couched in the strongest terms to General Allenby and Mr. Lloyd George, demanding immediate reinforcements. Other reports state that a pro-Kemal-ist demonstration began the disturb-ances.—Aus.-NZ. Cable Assn.

FIRES IN ALEXANDRIA

HEAVY CASUALTIES. Received May 26, 8.10 p.m. Cairo, May 24. There have been twenty-five fires in Alexandria during the last two days, mostly the property of Greeks. Many dead and wounded were found in private houses, while numbers are missing. It is officially stated 56 were killed and 210 wounded in the recent fighting. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assp.
