BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. THE DEFEAT OF AMERICANS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 26, 8.10 p.m. London, May 25. There is much interest In the amateur golf championships, owing to the presence of a number of American champions, including Chick Evans, Beddard, Dr. Hunter (the Californian champion), and Guildford (the famous big hitter), some of whom in the early stages made a good showing aga'inst the leading English players. In the second round Tolley (the champion), beat Guildford and W. Hodgson, a little known English player, beat Ouimet. In the third round W. Towns beat Evans; in the fourth round Beddard beat Tolley; in the fifth round Wright (America) defeated the veteran John Ball, Darwin beat Dr. Hunter, and Mackenzie defeated Beddard.
