EFFECT OF SHIPPING SLUMP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, May 24. Owing to the shipping slump the Commonwealth Line has been compelled to withdraw the fleet of cargo steamers and coastal cargo trade steamers, which axe now 'laid up at Sydney. DISLOYALTY SCOUTED. Sydney, May 24. Sir Walter Davidson, Governor of New South Wales, speaking at Lithgow, scouted the suggestion that there were disloyalists in Australia. The people who flew the red flag were very few, and he was in favor of such people having free speech. THE 44-HOUR WEEK. Sydney, May 24. Mr. Charles Hoskins, principal of Hoskin’s iron and sfeel works at Lithgow, commenting on the effect of the 44-hour. week, said it was a calamity for New South Wales. It meant a reduction by a twelfth of the working time, and their weekly pay roll was £12,000, which meant a loss of £lOOO. With other industries controlled by the firm the total annual losses would be £75,000. WRECKAGE FOUND. Received May 24, 8.5 p.m. Hobart, May 24. EMPIRE DAY IN SYDNEY. Received May 24, 9.10 p.m. Sydney, May 24.Empire Day was celebrated by members of the Cabinet and patriotic functions at schools, and many public gatherings were addressed by members of Cabinet and leading citizens. Although not a holiday, business places and public buildings*in the city were decorated with bunting.
