THE SHEARERS’ DISPUTE. By Telegrapli.—Press Association Dunedin, May 24. Consideration of the Otago and Southland. shearers’ dispute was deferred by the Conciliation Council pending the decision between the respective federations in Wellington. PROFITS ON MATCHES. Wellington, May 24. The prices at which matches are being retailed in the Wellington district has been the subject of investigation by the Wellington Price Investigation Tri. bunal. It was found that many tobacconists and other retailers have been selling slides at 3d per box. The price is considered by the tribunal to yield an unreasonably high rate of profit, and at a recent meeting the tribunal decided that a fair price for slides is 2%d per box, and it is notifying retailers accordingly. COMPENSATION CLAIMS. Wellington, May 24. Judgment was given in the Arbitration Court to-day in claims for compensation arising out of the deaths by drowning of the captain and engineer of the auxiliary schooner Omaka, which was wrecked off the Pencarrow Heads in January last. The question at issue in each ease was whether deceased was a worker employed by way of manual labor so as to bring him within section 2 of the Workers’ Compensation Act. Judgment in the case of the captain was for the defendants. The widow of the engineer was awarded £5OO and costs £l2 12s, and funeral expenses £2B. The mother’ of an able seaman was awarded £l5O with costs, and the mother of another member of the crew £3OO and costs.

FLOUR IMPORTATION STOPPED. Christchurch, May 24. Information that has been received by the Hon. E. P. Lee indicates that large stocks of flour are held by the millers throughout the Dominion. The Minister states that as there is an agreement between the Government, the wheat producers and the millers as to the prices for wheat and wheat products for the year ending February next, the importation of wheat products will not be permitted.
