STRIKE AT HOME.
DESIRE FOR A SETTLEMENT. OUTLOOK MORE HOPEFUL. UNION FUNDS DWINDLING. By Telograptt—Pres* Assn—Copyright. Received May 24, 8.5 p.m. London, May 23. The strike outlook is described as hopeful, as the miners' leaders are indulging in friendly conversations with unofficial mine-owners, who desire to Teach a settlement. The chief basis of optimism is a belief that the miners are willing to drop the demand for a national pool. Several important unions have intimated that they cannot longer support the miners, as their funds are running out, and they cannot pay their own unemployed members. Meanwhile the public is submitting almost without complaint to further restrictions on travel, fuel and light supplies.—United Service.
A NEW DIFFICULTY. TROUBLE OVER POOL QUESTION. Received May 25, 1.20 a.m. London, May 23. A new difficulty has arisen that is likely to delay a settlement of the strike. The owners and the Government require an assurance that the pool will be abandoned, but the miners are only prepared to depart from a pool on the understanding that a new plan for dealing wfth the coal mines as a national unit is produced as an alternative. No plan providing for a standard wage for all mine workers has been accepted by the owners or agreed upon in principle by the Government. — Cable Assn.
