Total 191 Bowling analysis—Durston took'seven wickets for 84 runs, Kennedy one for 65, Steveiis none for 18, Lee two for 21. With the weather and wicket favoring the batsmen to-day proved itself a day of small scoring, and, as far as the Australians were concerned, of disappointment. To Marylebone’s moderate total of 284 they replied with 191 only. Durston’s fine average of seven wickets for 84 was the outstanding feature. The weather was brilliant and the wicket good. The attendance numbered 15,000. Johnson was absent, owing to an injury received on Saturday, and Foster took charge instead. THE AUSTRALIANS’ PLAY. Collins and Bardsley opened to the bowling of Durston and Kennedy. Collins hit the first ball to leg for three. Durston’s deliveries were rising, and Collins received a blow above the wrist, causing delay. The next scoring strokes were five boundaries. At 25 Kennedy clean bowled Collins. Macartney commenced with characteristic quickness, but keen fielding of hard strokes kept down the scoring. The half-century went up in fifty minutes. Bardsley, whose batting was not convincing, was caught at short-leg by Durston, off his own bowling—2 for 51—with Taylor In. Eighteen runs were added before Macartney got out to a ball curling back into the- wicket. Foster missed an easy chance off Taylor, but he soon fell a victim to Durston.—4 for 70. Gregory joined his captain, and started with a narrow escape, Durston barely missing the wicket. This bowler was displaying a great variety. Stevens replaced Kennedy at 70. The weather then changed to windy and- cloudy. Stevens is a right-haiyled, medium paced bowler, with an occasional slow leg delivery. With the score at 89 Armstrong was badly hit between the left eye and the temple by a fast rising ball from Durston. Blood flowed freely, and he reeled and collapsed, but after medical attendance was able to walk to the pavilion. The luncheon adjournment was then taken. On resuming play after lunch Pellew accompanied Gregory, Kennedy bowling again. Just before reaching the century Gregory returned one to Durston, who just failed to catch It. At 109 Durston bowled Pellew, and Andrews followed. Gregory was batting brightly, and knocked ten off Durston in one over, and in the same over he went out leg before. Armstrong was cheered on resuming bis innings. Foster dropped a difficult chance from Andrews, and then Armstrong was nicely taken at the wicket ty Hubble.—7 for 160. Carter had a short stay, being bowled by Hurston. McDonald partnered Andrews. The fielding slackened. At 28 Andrews was again missed by Stevens off Durston. Lee, at 176, replaced Durston, who had bowled since the start a consistent good length ball, nipping from the pitch. McDonald went to 181, when Lee put in the finishing stroke by bowling Mailey. Andrews played a fine innings.

MARYLEBONE START BADLY. Marylebone started badly. Gregory and McDonald led the attack. Mailey missed Knight off Gregory’s fourth ball, and then Lee skied one to McDonald, who caught it at mid-on. Evans placed the same bowler into Gregory's hands. —2 for 9. Hendren partnered Knight, and the batting was interesting and steady. Armstrong replaced McDonald at 24, and the latter took Gregory’s place at 37. Fifty was hoisted in fifty minutes. Hendren, when he had made 30, was missed by Andrews, off Armstrong. This was the third possible catch missed , during the afternoon. Knight, after eighty minutes’ careful cricket, lost his wicket playing across to McDonald. Brown succeeded him. Gregory took McDonald’s place at 92, and Mailey replaced Armstrong at 104. A run later Hendren got his leg in front to the new bowler. He played a useful innings, with only two bad strokes. He hit eight fours. Stevens earned a pair of spectacles. Foster played a poor stroke. Brown and Hubble were together when stumps were drawn. It is practically certain that, Armstrong will play in the test match. No bone was fractured.
