THE RAILWAYS.

VISIT OF GENERAL MANAGER. AT STRATFORD TO-DAY. * At New Plymouth yesterday morning the General Manager, of Railways (Mr. R. W. McVilly) was occupied with a number of deputations, and in the afternoon proceeded to Waitara on a visit o-f inspection in connection with departmental affairs. After returning to New Plymouth. Mr. McVilly was waited on in the evening by a large and important deputation, who stressed the need for improved railway facilities. In responding to a welcome, Mr. McVilly expressed thanks tb' all who had done so much to make his stay in New Plymouth a pleasant one, and said he would carry away many kindly recollections of the town. The General Manager, who is accompanied by officers of his various departments, leaves*this morning at 8.50, and gOes to Stratford, where, he will receive deputations from the. local Chamber of Commerce and the Borough Council in connection with .the removal of the Stratford railway station and other matters.

Mr. McVilly will also calk at Hawera and discuss with the local Chamber of Commerce questions affecting the .extension of the railway facilities there.
