WAR ON POLES.
GERMAN ATTACK OPENS. THE POLES IX RETREAT. VILLAGES SET ON FIRE. Sy Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 23, 7.55 p.m. London, May 23. A Daily Mail correspondent accompanying the Germans in Silesia telegraphs that the Germans attacked the Polish rebels in Grossteiner forest on Sunday.
The Poles hurriedly evacuated villages, and looted and set fire to Grossteiner Castle and left notices threatening the destruction of factories, mines and towns if forced to retreat A large number of volunteers attacked with revolvers. and are now armed with rifles taken from the Polish dehd. The Germans are elated at their initial success, and are consolidating their position. A Times correspondent with the Polish troops reports incessant fighting on Saturday in the Rosenberg, Kreuzeberg, Ratibor and Krappitz areas in Upper Silesia. The Polish troops are strongly armed. Korfanty’s offer of disarmament and withdrawal is considered a joke or a diplomatic move. The Germans, who were strongly reinforced, threaten an early general advance.—United Service.
