THE RAILWAYS.
.VISIT OF GENERAL MANAGER A BUSY DAY TO-DAY. On Saturday evening Mr. R, W. MeVilly, General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, arrived in New Plymouth in response to a long-standing invitation of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce. He was accompanied by Mr. F. W. McLean (Engineer-in-Chief of the Railways), Mf. H. Buxton. (Chief Traffic Manager, Mr. E. T. Gillon (Chief Mecht anical Engineer), Mr. A. K. Harris (Dis-t trict Traffic Manager), and Mr. C. T* Jefferys (District Engineer). The party were met bv Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., Mr. E. P Webster (Presi-< dent of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce), and other members of the Chama ber. • Yesterday afternoon the visitors were the guests of the Chamber of Commerce on a run to the mountain house, a halt being made at “Hapurunui,” Mr. C. H. Burgess’ country home. The weather, was fairly fine, though the peak was obscured until nearly five o’clock. Afternoon tea was partaken of, and the return was made via Egmont Road, thoi visitors thoroughly enjoying the little i outing. Early this morning the party will in-1 spect the local station, yards, sortingj sheds, and wharves, and at ten o’clock < the General Manager will receive a dew] putation from the Harbor Board in re-| gard to the Department’s plans rew specting the point of junction of thai proposed ' Moturoa-Opunake line, theharbor improvements, etc. If time permits before luncheon, ha will also hear deputations froiq the Agri-] cultural Society'and the Hospital Board.] At 2< o’clock the party leave for Wai-’ tara, returning late in the afternoon. At 7 p.m. Mr. McVillv will hear tha| representatives of the Taranaki Chamber. of Commerce in connection with im- 1 proving the mail and local train ser*| vices, etc.
Representatives of the various chambers are meeting in to’wn at 11 a.m. to < discuss the matters to be placed be< fore the General Manager.
