UNEMPLOYMENT.
THE POSITION TN TARANAKI. OUTLOOK MORE HOPEFUL. The position as regards unemployment is apparently comparatively easy in Taranaki, as the district inspector of factories (Mr. W. J. Mountjoy) told a Daily News reporter yesterday that he had not received any enquiries from the sub-inspectors in the other’ Taranaki towns in reply to the circular sent out asking that eases of men out of work should be reported to him at New Plymouth. The investigation was made with the idea of finding work for men requiring it, but Taranaki is evidently in a better position than many other parts of New Zealand. At New Plymouth during this week the number of new applications for work which were received totalled seven—a considerable falling of? as compared with the preceding few weeks. Two men who called at the bureau yesterday had come from Wanganui in quest of employment, and had made the journey by road on foot, by stages. Their journey had. a successful ending, as the inspector was able to secure positions for them on public works in Taranaki. Tn regard to applications generally, the Labor Department has also been able to place a number of men in private employment. which- has helped to absorb those seeking work.
