TURF TOPICS.

Concluding day at Wanganui. Play Off broke down badly on Thursday. Mustard Pot was unlucky to lose the Borough Handicap. Malaga won the Connolly Handicap with a lot in hand. General Raven is a top notch steeplechaser, and will always carry my coin. Alf. Wright/ has won tte Wanganui Steeples two years In succession; with First Line last year and with Foeman this year. L Contrary te expectations, Coalition was

started in the Wanganui Steeples, and ran a fine race, but he could not give 2st. to the winner.

Glorious weather and a -ftrst track saw fresh time records hoisted at- Wanganui on Thursday. Listowel ran six furlongs in Imin. 14 l-ssec, Malaga ten furlongs in 2min. 8 4-5 sec, while the hacks covered eight anjl a half furlongs in Imin. 50 3-ssec.

Foeman’s time (6inin. 10 3-ssec) was nearly 13sec. faster than recorded by First Line ji the Wanganui Steeples last year, while General Raven won the Hack Steeples in 11 sec. faster time than it took Ngakanui in 1920.

When Slowcoach fell five furlongs from the finish of the Wanganui Steeples he was going along well in front, but appeared to shirk the fence, and falling heavly, sustained a broken leg. Those immediately following dodged the fallen horse, but he struggled to his feet just in time to upset Mattock, who was coming along at a great bat, and looked like gaining a place, ttough he had no chance of beating Foeman.

•‘Tartar” Julian’s luck was clean out at Wanganui. In addition to losing Slowcoach, the stable punted solidly on No Bother in the Purua Hack Handicap, only to see the prad finish just outside a place after getting a bad run.

Mattock was none the worse for his mishap in the big steeples, nor was his rider, Alf. Tricklebank. Mattock was sent home after the race, and will not be a runner at Wanganui to-day. As expected. Mustard Pot and Listowel carried the bulk of the money in the Borough Handicap, and both filled places. Listowel was one of the first away, and* carrying his 9.5 like a champion three-year-old, hung on long enough to win from Ruddy, who was in receipt of 291 b, with Mustard Pot, who got away badly, and was knocked about during the running, close up third. Mustard Pot should make amends next time out. Punters were right on the spot in the Hack Steeples, Zola, and General Raven carrying most coin, and paying the dividends. Te Toa was responsible for the pace for over a mile, and then General Raven went to the front. At this stage Zola was a long way in the rear, and Copestake had to push him hard to get within striking distance of the leader at the home bend. The effort was too miteh for Zola, and he pecked badly at the last fence, allowing General Raven to draw away again and win easily.

Slowcoach was a warm order for the Wanganui Steeples, and Khartoum was a trifle better backed than Foeman, Luke, Mattock, and Manhattan. The veterans, Master Strowan, ’ Coalition, Old Munglndl and Polthogue were neglected in the betting. Slowcoach made the pace from Old Munglndi, Polthogue, and Coalition, but in the next round Luke ran Into second place, and Foeman improved his position. Slowcoach was being proclaimed the winner when the back stretch was entered upon for the last time, but opinions differ as to how he was going at the time of his accident. ’ It appeared as If he was turning Lt up, and if such was really tte case he would have finished nearer last than first. Others again considered he was "strolling home,” but it is only a matter of opinion anyhow. Foeman was then left in front, with Luke, Coalition, Master Strowan and Khartoum next, and the flrst-natmed easily held his own tn the run to the post. The winner might have won under any circumstances, but Slowcoach’s fall made things easier for him. Coalition finished gamely under his big load, and just cut Luke out of second money. Master Strowan was not nearly ready, but nevertheless ran a good race. Khartoum was the principal disappointment of the race, but the distance was beyond him.

Mr. Jas. 'Bull started both Omahu and Ngata in ti e Century and the bracket was best backed. The Kemball combination, Gladful and Lord Nagar, was next in demand, with Old Gold, Powder King, All Talk, and Paddington Green following. Omahu (L. Morris) and Ngata (A. McDonald) raced together practically all the way, the pair of stablemates giving a pretty exhibition of jumping, and half a mile from home they looked like coining in on their own. Then Multive came through fast, -and headed the pair at the turn, but he made his run too soon, and McDonald, getting down on Ngata, got up and beat the Gisborne horse cleverly by a head. The winner gave a great exhibition, considering his weight and past performances, and the handicapper was evidently justified in assessing him as he did, though most good judges considered that the horse had not earned 10.4 in such company. Last year it took Loehella 4inin. 31sec to run the distance, and Ngata’s 4mln. 13 2-ssec was a great gallop. Ti e Kemball pair shaped wretchedly, but Omahu, Powder King and Hautawa were all handy at the finish.

Tame Fox was preferred to Malaga, Crucelle and Demos in the Connolly Handicap, but the favorite was never dangerous, though he was finishing on well, and may do better next start with a more favorable passage. Crucelle was always in the leading division, and assumed command along the back, with Amber Tips, Demos and Malaga next. Demos headed Mr. Cullinane’s mare at the home turn, but A. Reed brought Malaga along with a nice run, and won easily by a margin that was too narrow to suik the backers of the Canterbury gelding. Tame Fox and Kilgour were just outside a place, ahd Bonnetter was a long way back. Stork also ran badly.

The spirited support accorded No Bother and Equitable allowed Admiral Codrington to pay ’ a good ' price. Equitable had e /cry chance to win, but was not good enough. Admiral Codrlngton waited on the leaders to the distance, where le "went for the doctor,” and showed a clean pair of hee's to the opposition. It was the bet of the day!

One of the easiest victories at Wanganui on Thursday was that of Hyginas, who started favorite “in the Hack Hurdles, Although carrying 11.1 he ran to the front nearly a mile from home, and won without an effort in 3min. llsec for the mile and three-quarters. Simon, who filled the role of runner-up, was only eighth in the order of favoritism, and returned- his old followers a great dividend. Munition was always prominent, hut was outpaced by the former pair over the last two furlongs. Kareao did not shape too well, and Play Off, after leading over the first fence, broke down badly.
