Australia, whose first innings produced 395, in their second Innings lost five wickets for 203 and declared their innings closed. The Service team, who closed ttelr first innings for 260. made 140 in their second innings. On Australia resuming the weather was fine and hot. and the wicket fairly fast. The attendance was small. Jameson and Borrows
bowled. After Macartney and Mayne got going Dickenson replaced Jameson at 24. Macartney was caught when the total was 60, and Mayne was out the saene over. Andrews and Pellew brought the score up to 98 before Andrews was dismissed by'an easy catch. The century appeared after 70 minutes. The bowling was steady and the fielding fair. Pellew, at 48. was missed in the slips. He reached fifty in 36 minutes, and six runs later re was smartly taken by Borrows. Taylor, whose play was keenly watched, played a fine punishing game. He and Armstrong were going strong when the innings was declared at five wickets for 203.
The home team’s second innings was chiefly notable for Gregory’s success with the bail and Oldfield's smartness behind the wicket. The former accounted for seven wick>•3 for 52 runs, while Oldfield bad four victims, making seven to his credit during the match.
The weather in the afternoon was overcast and the wickets fell fast in the early stages, Williams at 8, Wilkinson at 15, and Jameson at 19. The fourth and fifth wickets went at 65. Blount played a fine forcing game. Blount’s being the eighth fifty made against the Australians during the tour. With seven down for 124 and half an hour to go, excitement ran high. The field was drawn close in. Fowler's dismissal at 133 dashed British hopes, and the remaining wicket went cheaply The Australians won with twelve minutes to spare. Details are:— AUSTRALIA. ENGLISH COUNTY CRICKET.
London, May 16. Playing against Worcester, Douglas took seven wickets for 91. Bestwick, playing for Derbyshire against Warwickshire, took nine wickets for 65. Fry made 96 playing for Hampshire. He 13 in splendid form, driving with great power and placing his shots cleverly. The brothers Cornwallis, playing for Hampshire against Kent, left the field on receiving a telegram stating that Sinn Feiners had, murdered their brother in Galway. Playing against Sussex Hendren made 102. Playing against Derbyshire in the second innings Howell took eigM wickets for 69 runs. He bowled with great force.
