FIREMAN DROWNED.
FATALITY AT NEW PLYMOUTH.
FALL WHEN LEAVING STEAMER.
A fireman named Hugh Mackin, a native of Scotland, and a member of the crew of the steamer Australcrag, was drowned in the New Plymouth harbor last night. The deceased was returning to his ship about 7.30 p.m. when by mistake he got on board the steamer Flora. On discovering his error he endeavored to regain the wharf, and in doing so fell between the ship’s side and the wharf. Mr. C. J. Beck, second officer of the Australcrag, heard the splash, and went to the man’s assistance, but twenty minutes elapsed before the deceased was brought out of the water. He was apparently dead, but artificial means of restoring respiration were employed for an hour. The body showed no signs of life, and it was removed to the morgue. Au inquest will be held, but the tiav' has not yet been fixed.
