INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Dr. and Mrs. Nutting narrowly escaped a bad accident while motoring from Tariki, whither the doctor had gone to visit a patient, on Sunday morning. It appears that when coming along one of the best parts of the road, between Rugby and Norfolk Roads, the steering gear of the car, which Dr. Nutting was driving, failed to respond to the wheel, and the car, travelling at a good speed, turned to the right, butted into the fence that divides the railway reserve from the road, and was brought up, all standing. The car was rather seriously damaged in front wheel and spring, but neither of t'he occupants suffered more than a shake, a shock and a mild scare.
His many old friends who met him .were glad to welcome Major R. S. Matthews in Inglewood on Saturday, and pleased to see him looking well and hearty. As one of the pioneers of the Kaimata Block, there were few in Inglewood district in those days better known or more respected than he. Such visitors are always sure of a welcome here. Having seen this part of Taranaki in its early stages of development, it is pleasant to hear him express his satisfaction with the signs it shows of steady and prosperous advance. It is understood that he is only paying a flying visit here to his son, Mr. Matthews, of Rugby Road, who, as a returned soldier, is there settled; having determined to try farming life. That old fellow settlers will wish him and Mrs. Matthews, who is with him on his visit, all health and prosperity, goes without saying.
