MAYOR AND NEWSPAPER.
IMPROPER REQUEST REFUSED.
By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.
Sydney, May 17. The Sydney Morning Herald says the Lord Mayor practically demanded the surrender to himself of the editorial discretion of the Herald as, the price at which he would consent to give information for publication in the columns of the paper. He dictated two statements to a Herald representative, on the condition they appeared in full as given, otherwise no further information would be given and he would refuse to see the Herald’s representative. The Herald, in declining to accept this ukase, says that the discretion of the editor in regard to all matter published must be retained, as much for the protection of the individual and the public as for the well-being of the newspaper, but in this case the grossness of the demand made was accentuated by the impropriety of the matter of which publication was sought.
