SEQUEL TO COLLISION.
CAUSE OF DEATH INVOLVED.
' INJURIES OR AN OPERATION?
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, Guy Fulton, of Wellington, merchant, pleaded not guilty to having caused the death of William Haskisson through his motor colliding with deceased’s gig. Lengthy evidence was taken regarding deceased’s treatment in hospital. Deceased had a fractured thigh and certain formations prevented the union of a metal plate screwed to the bone to keep the ends together, and an operation lasted two hours. The patient was treated for shock until his death, which occurred an hour after.
Medical witnesses, cross-examined at length, said all possible care was taken, and the most modern type of splint was used. Some of the bandages would be removed for massage, which was to secure improved circulation. Had the operation not been carried out deceased would have had a “flail” leg, for which crutches would have been necessary. As far as was known deceased would have continued to live if the operation had not been performed. Dr. Morice confirmed the evidence of Dr. Park that without the operation deceased would probably have been alive to-day. Mr. Justice Hosking: “Yes, but probably with a useless leg. I want that made clear.” The case is proceeding.
