WAITARA.

BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Waitara, May 12. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor and Crs. Rennie, Jones, Johns, Johnston and Ogle. Apologies were received for Crs. Blair and Jaggs. Mr. Geo. Brough complained that Mr. E. George haij fenced a part of the road leading to his property, and asked the council to instruct that gentleman to remove the fence.—<Mr. George to be notified to remove same.

The G.P.O. notified that they were now prepared to pay the rates claimed for on the the property bought by them from C. Ogle. The New Zealand Fine Arts Society wrote in reference to the destruction of Paritutu for new harbor purposes, and asked the council’s co-operation in saving same from destruction. No action was taken.

The Health Department questioned the qualification of the council’s overseer to act as health officer for the borough. The contribution previously asked by them as a subsidy towards the Government inspector for the district was £3O, but it has now been reduced to £l5. The council decided (seeing that Mr. Westerman is not a certificated man) to pay the subsidy and have the services of the Government inspector. The Progress League asked the council if they would allow a copy of a petition for the formation of a power board to be taken charge of by the council's clerk.—Granted.

The Progress League notified amended rules, whereby an executive committee will be set up, comprising one member from each body.—-Mr. Morgan was elected to represent the council. The following committees were appointed for the year:

Deputy-Mayor: Mr. Ogle. Electric light committee: Crs. Blair, Ogle and Jaggs. Waterworks and reserves committees: Crs. Rennie, Johnston and Johns.

Library committee: Crs. Morgan, Jones and Rennie.

Finance committee: The whole council. Cemetery committee: Crs. Jones and Morgan. Fire Board: Crs. Ogle, Blair and Rennie.

Valuation: Crs. Johns, Ogle and Jones. The Mayor referred to the urgency of placing a new pile at the bridge, or repairing the broken one. It was resolved to leave the matter over until the summer, as -the cost would be too great now, owing to the bad weather and the likelihood of floods.

The Mayor said he thought it was time something wjas done to put the electric light on a sound footing. To do this a loan would have to be floated, and the sooner this was done the better. —Left to the electric light committee to report as to what sum would be required. * Mr. Jones was appointed borough inspector.

’The usual honorarium of 50 guineas was voted to the Mayor.

The overseer complained of wanton destruction of fire plug indicators; also the removal of plug covers, several having had to be replaced. One building permit had been issued for a new dwelling.

The road foreman asked for permission to hire the Clifton County road roller to reform the metal on Big Jim’s Hill to Cracroft Street, a distance of 20 chains or more, at an approximate cost of 15s per chain.—Permission granted. The road foreman also reported having formed Johnston Street and laying drains.

GENERAL.

Mr. W. T. Jennings announced at the farewell gathering the other evening that while he is absent from New Zealand the interests of his constituency will be watched over by Mr. S. G. Smith as far as Awakino, by Mr. Young on the Waikato side and by Mr. R. W. Smith at the Waimarino end
