EGMONT RACES. CONCLUDING DAY’S RESULTS. KHARTOUM WINS THE BIG STEEPLES. The Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting was brought to a successful conclusion at Hawera yesterday in fine though cold weather. There was a very large attendance, the gate takings showing a considerable increase on last year. The rain of the previous night had made the course very heavy early in the day, but the drying wind improved it as the day advanced. The public again had a very interesting day’s sport, fields being very large, whilst/the finishes were all exciting and in many cases remarkably close. Mr. J. Cameron, in the judge’s box, hoisted his numbers very promptly. Mr. O’Connor had to exercise considerable patience at the starting barrier, owing to some of he horses being fractious, but in most cases he got his fields away well.
Speculation was brisk, and winners were hard to find, favorites only passing the post first on two occasions during the afternoon. The sum of £34,730 was put through the machine, as compared with £33,921 for the first day last year, an increase of £BO9. The total for the two days was £09,158, as compared witW £09,810 for the two days last year, a decrease of £652. Mr. F. Moore was in charge of the totalisator, and Mr. Ma bin was the Government totalisator official.
There were several falls during the day. but the jockeys escaped injury. Stipendiary stewards * McMahon and Murchison were present, but there were no inquiries. As on the first day the races were run up to time, the last race being over in plenty of time to enable patrons to catch the special trains, a tribute to the efficiency of the officials, lead by Mr. Stratton. The Hawera Citizens’ Band, under Conductor Gould, again rendered a fine programme. The principal cross country event, the Opeke Steeplechase, was contested by 11 horses, and after a fine race the New Plymouth horse Te Toa was just beaten by Khartoum on the post by the narrowest of margins. Until the judge’s numbers went up it was. impossible for the public to tell which had the verdict, and there would have been no quibble had it been given a dead heat. The principal flat race, the Davidson Memorial, saw an equally close finish, Malaga and Karaeo passing the post together. and the verdict went to the latter by a very narrow margin. Detailed results are:— NGAMUTU APPRENTICES’ HANDICAP (Hack conditions), of 200 sovs; second 35 sovs. and third 15 sovs. from the stakes. Six furlongs.

In eight seasons in England there have been 304 foals by Sunstar, an average per season of exactly 38. Sunstar’s record as a foal-get-ter is as follows:—In 1913, 11; 1914, 29; 1915, 43, 1916, 33; 1917, 34; 1918, 51; 1919, 54; 1920, 40.
A London paper has it that a book-maker, taking advantage of the Act which makes money paid by cheque for betting debts recoverable at law, is bringing an action against Mr Solly Joel for £60,000 paid to the latter. The position is a peculiar one, and it is anticipated the House of Lords will deal with it. The Johannesburg Turf Club had a very successful year. The Latest (Durban) mentioned that £50;000 approximately was given away in stakes—£9ooo more than the previous year —and the club made a profit of £50,850 from the totalisator. With totalisator profits more than covering the stakes, the club certainly had a satisfactory year.
