CONSUL COMMITS SUICIDE.
ALTERS MIND TOO LATE. UPSET BECAUSE WIFE LEFT HIM. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 12, 8.10 p.m. Sydney, May 12. The inquest concerning the death of Mr. Kaarlo J. Naukler (Consul for Finland), disclosed that Naukler committed suicide. A doctor gave evidence that deceased came to him and said he had injected morphia into his leg because he was upset over his wife leaving him. He asked if the doctor could save him, and remedies were tried, but they proved unavailing. According to other evidence Naukler had been overworking, and he was suffering from mental strain. A verdict was returned that death was caused by morphia, wilfully selfadministered. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. The late Mr. Naukler, who had represented the interests of Finland in Australia for some time, toured New Zealand about six months ago, making inquiries with a view to establishing one or more Consulates in the Dominion. In addition to the aspects of the countries requiring study in connection with his duties, the late Mr. Naukler took a deep interest in all forms of athletics in Australia and New Zealand. He appeared at several sports gatherings in Sydney, giving exhibitions of javelin-throwing and discus-throwing.
