IRISH PEACE.
PROGRESS BEING MADE. . SINN FEIN MAY DROP REPUBLIC. OFFICIAL CIRCLES HOPEFUL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright, Received May 12, 8.10 p.m. London, May 11. Sinn Fein is prepared to abandon its claim for an independent republic if granted fiscal autonomy. A strong peace movement is making progress. De Valera’s agents are visiting London to explore the possibilities of suggesting a truce on a basis that the troops and ‘’black and tans” are confined to barracks during the elections. The Government, in reply, asks what assurance will be forthcoming that the truce will not be used for re-organis-ing the Sinn Fein forces. A fairly hopeful opinion prevails in Government circles. It is not suggested that a truce would affect the elections, in which Sinn Feiners are certain to be returned unopposed in nearly all electorates, but it is believed that once peace is re-established the people will insist on its retention.—Times Service.
