EGMONT WINTER MEETING.
FIRST DAY’S RACING
MATTOCK WINS THE BIG STEEPLES.
Weather conditions were decidedly wintry yesterday for the opening day of the Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting on the Hawera racecourse, the weather being cold, with occasional show-’' ers. Nevertheless there was a very large attendance, the gate takings showing an increase. Racing throughout was of a very interesting character, fields being large and finishes close. The course, as was only i to be expected after the wet weather, . was somewhat holding, but it gave evi•dence of the careful attention bestowed on it by Mr. A. Morse. Mr. C. O’Connor, as starter, handled the large fields well, his despatches in the majority of the races'being very good. Mr. J. Cameron, in the judge’s box, had some close finishes to decide, but his decisions were always hoisted promptly. The principal cross-country event, the Egmont Steeplechase, drew a field of nine, the winner turning up in Mr. J. B. Gaisford’s aged gelding Mattock, who won a good race from the Aucklandowned Slowcoach. The principal flat race, the Mcßae Memorial, was won by the favorite Malaga from a field of nine. There were a few falls during the running of the hurdle races and chases, but none of the jockeys were injured. Mr. McMahon, stipendiary steward, was present, but there was only one inquiry during the day. W. Pine was before the stewards for cutting in too soon after the start of the Mcßae Memorial. The stewards took into consideration the fact that he was an apprentice, and had not much riding experience, and under the circumstances he only received a caution. Speculation was brisk, the public correctly sorting out the winner on four occasions during the afternoon. The totalizator handled £34,428, as compared with £35,889 for the same day last year, a decrease of £1461. This decrease is largely accounted for by the fact that the machine had, closed on the first race before the special trains from the north and south had arrived.
The officials controlling the meeting got the races off well to time,, whilst the secretary (3Lr. V. B. Strattdn) had complete arrangements made for a successful meeting. The Hawera Citizens’ Band was present, under Conductor Gould, and gave an enjoyable programme.
