The unpromising weather conditions this morning did not act as a deterrent to Stratford race-goers, a large number of whom attended the Hawera races to-day. The town has, in consequence, been comparatively quiet to-day. The census returns for the Stratford County are expected to be available by to-morrow night. Delay in obtaining the papers from certain districts has been the reaeon why they were not available before. Mr. C. Ward, manager of the King’s Cinema Theatre, Stratford, has enlisted the support of several members of the executive of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce for his proposal that the lack of telephone communication between Tahora and Tatu, on the Stratford— Ohura Road, should be overcome by means of radio-telephony. Mr. Ward has made a study of the science of wireloss telegraphy and telephony, and offers to provide a demonstration before Government officers, in order to show that ris scheme is p 1 act icable. It is understood that the matter will be considered at the nexL meeting of the Chamber of Commerce.
The change in the statutory halfholiday from Saturday to Thursday takes effect this week, in accordance with the notification in the Gazette. Farmers are therefore reminded that the shops will close at noon to-morrow (Thursday), and at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, remaining open until fl p.m. on Saturday. The annual meeting of the Stratford Sports and Pastimes Club will be held in the Fire Brigade Hall to-morrow evening (Thursday), at 7.30 o’clock. A full attendance of members is requested. Members of the Stratford Agricultural and Pastoral Association are reminded that the annual meeting will be held in the Parish Hall, at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday next. A number of important matters will come up for discussion, and a large attendance is desired.
A dance will be held in the Stanley Road School on Friday evening next, and an invitation ds extended to everyone to be present. First-class music and a good supper will be provided, and the floor will be in splendid order. Particulars of the prices are advertised in this issue.
