ALLEGED BOOKMAKING.
CHRISTCHURCH CASE FAILS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, William Whelan was charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Evidence of the making of bets by letter with accused was given by Charles Carlson (bushman, Kaitiki), and Detective McLeod (Gisborne). Several other witnesses called by the Crown cTaimed privilege. The jury, after a retirement of mtysix minutes, returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty and accused was discharged.
