BOXING.
LIGHT-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 9. In a twenty rounds contest at the National Sporting Club Ernie Rice defeated Papin in the tenth round, winning the light-weight championship of Europe. TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. FRIDAY'S TOURNAMENT. A meeting of the committee of the Taranaki Boxing Association was held last night, when Mr. E. Whittle presided over a full attendance. Ten new members were elected. The secretary reported that Mr. R. Barlow had donated a trophy valued at £5 ss.—lt was resolved to thank Mr. Barlow. It was reported that complete arrangements had been made for the tournament to be held on Friday evening, and that bookings were already coming in freely, and that there
was every indication of a crowded house. The principals in . the professional contest, Thompson and Richardson, are in good form, and as both are proficient in the boxing art, a scientific contest should be witnessed. The exhibition < professional bout between Hart (New South Wales), and Facoorey (Auckland) should also be worth going a long way to see, the New Zealand bantam champion having a pretty style, besides being very fast, as also is Hart, who has put up some great performances over the other side. The amateur bouts, principally between North and. South Taranaki, should produce keen contests. The box plan is open at Colliers, and should be inspected without delay. STRATFORD SPORTS AND PASTIMES CLUB. FIRST ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report and balance-sheet of the Stratford Sports and Pastlunes Club for the working of the club since Its inception In July, 1920, discloses a satisfactory state of affairs. The club has a membership of 94, quite a number of tl.ese being junior 1 members under 21 years of age, and the committee expresses the opinion that during the coming year this number might easily be doubled. The active members of the club have been very successful In tournaments held in neighbouring towns, and two members of the club were winners of championship honors at the Taranaki championship tournament held in New Plymouth in October last. This, no doubt, reflects credit on Mr. Frank Foley, the club’s honorary trainer, who, as coach and trainer, gave great assistance to the members. During the year two tournaments were held, and were very valuable to the members, especially to the active members, as they learned quite a lot of useful information from the professional boxers engaged. The tournaunent held on August 10, when the club was successful in staging the New Zealand bantam championship, proved very successful in every way and returned a profit to the club of £55 17s Bd. The tournament held on November 24 (show night) was not so successful from a financial point of view, and the committee think this may be explained by the following reasons: They found it impossible to get a suitable match under £l5O, and owing to there being several tournaments in October and November, they did not receive the support.; but from any other point of view tournament was very successful and the boxing was of a very high standard. The club had found great difficulty in obtaining a suitable shed for training purposes, and it will be necessary for the incoming committee to give this matter their earliest consideration. The committee found It necessary to purchase all the necessary appointments for staging a tournament, but these could be looked upon as a valuable asset to the club. The committee desired to extend to the Press a vote of thanks for their valuable assistance in reporting the working of the club, also to Mr. C. A. Gray for the use of his premises for training purposes and the use of his office for committee meetings, and to the volunteer workers who gave their services and assisted with the tournaments. The committee also wish to place on record their appreciation of the services of Mr. J. S. Rowe, who as a member of the committee gave very valuable assistance and at all times proved a keen worker in the Interests of the club.
The balance-sheet showed that the receipts, including members’ subscriptions £93 18s, had amounted to £152 15s Bd, and the expenditure to £l2B 5s Id, leaving a credit balance of £24 10s 7d. The liabilities of the club are nil, and the assets are valued at £74 Ids Bd.
