WAGES IN BRITAIN.

Protracted negotiations between the building trade employers and the operatives have terminated in the conclusion of an agreement for a national reduction of wages by twopence per hour from May 16. Many hundreds of Firth of Forth trawlermen have struck against the proposed reduction of 12| per cent, in wages. A fish famine is threatened failing a speedy settlement. AUSTRIAN FINANCES. Vienna, May 8. It is understood that, at the request of the League of Nations finance committee the Government proposes to ! seek a, credit from the Entente of 300,000.000 franks, secured mainly on a • 6 per cent, mortgage on all private landed property. The Government will also provide for the uncovered deficit of 17,000,000,000 kroner by internal loans. It is estimated it will require two and a half years to reconstruct Austrian finances. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ENDED. Stockholm, May 8. The Swedish Parliament has abolished capital punishment. RUSSO-GERMAN TRADE. Berlin, May 8. The Russo-German trade agreement has been signed. It is terminable in three months and the authorities will exchange commercial delegations enjoying diplomatic prerogatives. Merchant ships are to have the customary privileges. There is to be a speedy resumption of inter-postal and telegraph services, and the exchange of prisoners. Politcal propaganda is barred.
