INCREASE IN WELLINGTON.

Reports received indicate that a fairly large number of men are coming into the city from country districts seeking but Jailing to secure employment. It is stated farmers are cutting down the .number of their hands and are reducing wages, and a number of men left their employment, swelling the ranks of the unemployed. Wellington, May 7.

The following statement was made today by the acting Prime Minister, Sir F. H. Bell: “Cabinet has arrived at a general understanding that in view of the probability that there would be some increase in unemployment and of scarcity of money available for Public Works expenditure, building operations would be rigidly curtailed in order that more money may be available for employment of general labor.”
