MEN SLEEPING OUT.
DEMAND FOR WORK MADE. TO BE PUT ON PUBLIC WpRKS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A deputation comprising a numl>er of unemployed, Mr. Parry, M.P., Mr. O’Neill (secretary of the General Laborers’ Union) and Mr. Williams (New Zealand Workers’ Union), waited on the district engineer of the Public Works Department this morning with a request that immediate relief be given for men out of work in the form of either work or monetary assistance. A special plea was made on behalf of ten men without homes who are sleeping out, and also married men who are paying exorbitant rents for' furnished One case was cited of a married man and his wife paying 24s for a furnished room.
The engineer intimated that the department was moving in the matter. He expressed surprise at the condiions re-, vealed and, promised to confer with Mr. Lightfoot, head of the local branch of the Labor Department. As the outcome Mr. Lightfoot promised that homeless men would be 'placed on public works jobs to-morrow morning and the other matters would receive immediate attention.
