GROWTH OF OVERSEAS TRADE. THIS YEAR’S ACTIVITY. As an indication of the development of the overseas trade at the port ai New Plymouth, the figures giving a couM parison of the last three years wittf those for the current year afford a strike ing illustration of the port’s expansion. In 1918 only one liner, the Port Alma/ of 6278 tons, visited New Plymouth. The following .year 7 vessels aggregating 50,248 tons entered the port—viz., Afata-j tua, Orissa, Kia Ora (twice), Whaka-< tane, Karamea. A total overseas ton« nage of 79,739 berthed in 1920, being represented by the Alamari (twice), Lo-* raine, Gallic, Kumara, Donald McKay/ Otarama, Port Alma, West Camargo/ Port Pirie, Walton Half and Ta.rn.on Maru, twelve visits in all. For the first five months of the pre-) sent year 62,585 tons of shipping will liave visited New Plymouth. Of these, ths Wangaratta, West Afahwah, Port Pirie and Port Hacking, aggregating 33,058 tons, have already berthed since the beginning of the year, whilel five other liners—the Waimate, City ofi Winchester, Australcrag, Port VictoU and West Wind —a total of 29,527 tonsj are due before the end of May.
