BURGLARY CHARGES
THEFT OF A BICYCLE AT NEW PLYMOUTH.
The adjourned case in which Raymond Sheaves was charged with having attempted to burglariously enter the premises of T. Fountaine, Eltham, was heard yesterday morning before the .Hon. W. C'arncross and Mr. T. C. Stanners, J.P.’s.
Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at New Plymouth for sentence. The same accused was also charged with having stolen a bicycle, the property’ of Ronald Connett, from the iialtwater baths,' New Plymouth, in January last. When arrented, accused eaid that he had purchased the bicycle for £2 10s from a man at Waitara. However, he afterwards admitted to the constable that he had stolen the machine. He said he had been working for a man named Were, and had a smash with a cart, for which Were had threatened him with a thrashing. He then took the bicycle, which he had found standing outside the salt-water baths, and had cleared out to Hawera, leaving all his clothes behind him. Ronald Connett deposed to his bicycle having been taken from the salt-water baths at New Plymouth. He had identified it that morning in Eltham, knowing it by its number.
Constable Townsend said he had been suspicious of the truth .of accused’s story when he said he had purchased it for £2 10s. He found that the machine agreed with the description given in the Police Gazette of a stolen bicycle. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme. Court, New Plymouth, for sentence.
