A WELLINGTON SENSATION.
PROMINENT MAN ARRESTED.
A sensation was created in the Public Service in Wellington by the arrest on Wednesday night of Arthur Marryat, clerk of the Government Life Insurance Department, on a charge that on April 30, at Wellington, he stole £lO7, the property of the department. Accused came before the court yesterday and was remanded till the 12th instant on bail, two sureties of £5OO each, which were forthcoming. Marryat is a prominent public servant, having been elected, to represent the employees on the Public Service Appeal Board and Superannuation Board. He is also chairman of the Olympic Games Council. He was recently promoted to take an important administrative position in the department’s Auckland office. It ii reported that there are deficiencies in connection with the department’s Wellington district accounts running into four figures.
