Coyle's weights for the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting appear to have given almost universal satisfaction, and accepUncs for the first day (which close this evening at 8 p.m.), should be very large. The feature of the gathering will, of course, be the jumping events, and as these have attracted the- Dominion's best, and owners are natoraßy tqpdoui to give their horses a run.

in public, before the bigger events at Wanganui and at Ellerslie, one can confidently look forward to seeing a bold array at Hawera on Wednesday and Thursday next. A good number of outside trainers have already brought their teams to Hawera, and accommodation has been booked for Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Canterbury and other visiting trainers and horses. Next week’s meeting will be a- memorable one,, and both as regards quality and quantity the fields will be the best ever produced on the Egmont Club’s course. A splendid steeplechase course has been laid out, and patrons should witness some fine sport there next week. TUBE TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) The many friends of the successful lightweight jockey, S. Anderson, who, it will be remembered, became seriously ill at Palmerston recently, will be pleased to hear that ne was sufficiently recovered to return to his home in Hawera on Tuesday. Th Canterbury trainer, F. D. Jones, is bringing Gang 'Awa, Mustard Pot and Malaga to the Egmont and Wanganui meetings. On his return he will probably take Amythas south. Amythas is said to be quite sound again, and will be prepared for early spring racing. In Marton yesterday a keen judge of jumping horses informed the writer that Ngata will tickle ttem ail up in steeplechase events this winter. All of Mr. Bull’s horses are well schooled, both at Hunterville ("down on the farm") and on the training tracks at Marton, and anything that carries the green jacket and gold cap is always entitled to respect. Steel Beil, winner of the Auckland Trotting Cup and other big races, is to be sent to the stud next season. Author Dillon Is mentioned as the likely consort for the wonderful pacing mare. Signature is schooling as well as anything at Ellerslie, and should be worth keeping in mind at coastal meetings this month. "Tartar” Julian is bringing Slowcoach and No Bother to the Egmont meeting. The former is brilliant, but erratic, as past performances proved.

A Palmerston scribe reports that Demos is moving in a satisfactory manner on the local tracks. If this brilliant customer stands he should win a race while the tracks are soft.

Several steeplechase fences have been erected at Awapuni, and Vigilo, Papanui, and others.are regularly schooled. P&panui jumps slowly, but Vigilo has been responsible for several fair performances. According to a Wanganui paper of Wednesday’s date useful work was done by Tivoli, Rose Queen, Khartoum, Western Boom, Desire, Amber Tips, Malingerer, and a number of others. Zola (E. Copestake) and Sir Fisher (W. Weller) tad a round over the big fences, and both gave a splendid display of jumping. They kept together all the way, taking each obstacle without the semblance of a mistake, the exhibition of fencing being one of the best seen here for a long time. Erin’s Isle went out with Warrawee, for a schooling lesson over the hurdles, but Warrawee cleared out from the Maniapoto gelding, who did not run too kindly. Warrawee shaped very well indeed, and gives every promise of making good over tho small sticks. Flying Master ran five furlongs in Imin. ssec., finishing well ahead of Legato, while Tirana beat Munition over four furlongs in 53sec. Royal Exchange and Prince Hal have both been giving finished exhibitions of jumping at Trentham.

Esperance was responsible for a good gallop at Trentham last week, and looks like picking up easy money at the Marlborough meeting. Others that should run well are Sweet Memory and Halloweve.

Although endowed with a cool thousand In stakes, the Otago Steeplechase has only attracted ten entries.

Owners and trainers are reminded that n ominations for all events at the Egmont-V/ati-ganul Hunt. Club’s steeplechase meeting, tn be held on the Hawera racecourse, close with the secretary, Mr. W. MacFarlane, Waverloy, ■at 8 o'clock this evc-nrg.
