With the exception of Astill, who batted freely and without restraint and made a number of good Strikes chiefly to. the off, and Sharp, who gave a determined, enterprising and correct display, the county team in "their second essay fell easy victims to the bowling of Mailey and McDonald. The first wicket fell in McDonald's opening over. For a time the chief occupation of the crowd was to cheer xMailey’s bowling and the Australians’ fine fielding. Astill, at 21, gave Collins a chance off Mailey, but It was not accepted. With him out of the way the bowlers made short work of the balance of the team, with the exception of Sharp, who continued to gather runs confidently and was cheered for his fine not-out innings, which towards the end was much livelier. THE PLAY DESCRIBED. London, May 2. The weather was brilliant and the wicket good when Bardsley and Macartney resumed to the bowling of Astill and Benskin. Bardsley, with some good late cuts, brought his score to 109, and was then caught by Sidwell in a second attempt, off Astill. Taylor opened shakily, and before he got properly set Benskin removed his leg stump. —3 for 299. Armstrong’s arrival was greeted with an ovation, but he failed to stay, Benskin knocking over his middle peg first ball. Gregory joined Macartney, and 300 appeared after 175 minutes’ play. Macartney gave a chance of stumping a run later, but Sidwell failed to gather the ball. Good bowling kept down runs, and the first chance came after 55 minutes’ play. Shipman, replacing Benskin, Macartney mishit his second ball, and Benskin, running in behind point, secured it. The Sydney man had batted three hours and scored all round the wicket, and hit twenty fours.—s for 342. The fielding was generally alert. Andrews partnered Gregory, who at 25 gave Shipman a hot return, which he failed to hold. At 345 Lord relieved Astill. At luncheon the score was 5 for 3GI. Afterwards Shipman and Astill bowled. Andrews Was caught off Shipman’s third ball. Ryder filled the gap and was missed when he had made a single, Astill dropping an easy return. Gregory, who was playing a stylish, free game, totted up 50 in an hour, but smart fielding cut down many powerful drives to singles. Four hundred was hoisted in four hours, both batsmen punishing Shipman. Benskin replaced hkn with a new ball at 4.30. Gregory nearly played on. He attempted to save the wicket, but played right across and spread-eagled the stumps. He batted 80 minutes, his innings including nine fours.> Ryder played an attractive game, and was not out for 27 when the Innings closed. AUSTRALIANS’ NEXT MATCH.
