MACAULAY’S HISTORY AND TODAY.

The people who are pessimistic about our problems and financial difficulties to-day would talk differently if they studied history. Grumbling and panic-talk are caused by short views, narrow outlooks. Read Macaulay’s story of the condition© prevailing after the Napoleonic wars, when England’s bankruptcy was predicted by the pessimists of the period. The historian wrote: “If the most enlightened man had been told in 1792 that in 1815 the interest on eight hundred millions would be duly paid to the day, he would have been so hard of belief as if he had been told that the Government would be in the possession, of the lamp of Aladdin, or of the purse of Fortunatus.” The point is this, that present difficulties should not deter faith in the future. There is a financial stringency in New Zealand at present; but the future of the Dominion, and of its primary industries in particular, is sure and and solid. Many farmers are in need of- temporary financial assistance, and in order to provide this, £250,000 worth of bonds are being issued by the N.Z Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd. The public would do well to rally to the support of the fanners—and to" the increase of their own income as well. A gilt-edged 7| per cent, investment, in so simple and attractive a form, should not be passed by. Everyone with savings of £25 upwards can ; “come in.” The bonds are in three denominations —25, £5O, and £loo—and are repayable in five or ten years, at purchaser’s option, which must be stated at time of application. They bear interest at the rate of 7| per cent, per annum, payable half-yearly, free of income tax. Both bonds and interest coupons are readily transferable, like banknotes. Read full particulars in the prospectus, obtainable from the N.Z. Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., Christchurch, or from any branch of the Bank of New Zealand, or any member of the Stock Exchange. Enquire to-day.
