Stratford, May 2. The funeral of the late Mr. P. H. Beere, who died from burns received in the explosion of -oil at the Diesel station on Friday, took place at the Kopnatama Cemetery yesterday. The cortege was very lengthy, those present including the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) and members of the Borough Council. A large number of beautiful wreaths were sent by friends. The pallbearers were Messrs. P. and E. Beere

(cousins of deceased), Messrs. Rowson, Butcher and Tocker (fellow employe6s) find Mr. P. Aitken. The Rev. C. W. Howard officiated at the graveside. The shortage of telephones in the Dominion at the present time is affecting Stratford as well as other places. The

number of subscribers connected to the Stratford exchange is about 350, and over 75 applications are in hand for additional telephones. Some of the applicants been waiting many months, and the indications are that they will have to wait a good while longer before telephones come to hand. The census returns for Stratford borough are expected to be available this week. The’vital statistics for the Stratford district for the month of April, as supplied by the registrar (Mr S. H. James), are as follows, the figures for April, 1920, being given in parentheses: Births, 17 (20); deaths, 4 (3); marriages, 2 (2).

An epidemic of motor-cycle thieving has broken out in Stratford, there having been at least half a dozen motor cycles stolen or illicitly borrowed during the past couple of months. On Sunday night a motor cycle was taken from Collins’ stables in Regan Street, and the owner recovered it in the saleyards this morning. Mr. E. M. Gatton, who received very severe injuries in a motor accident at Turakina on April 9, died at the Wanganui Hospital on Friday night. The late Mr. Gatton was well known in the Stratford district, having been formerly farming at Makahu. He was thirty-five years of age and single. The official observer (Mr. T. Harry Penn) reports that rain fell on ten days during April, the total fall amounting to 5.69 inches. The only considerable fall was 2.95 inches on the Oth, less than an inch falling on each of the other nine days. The wet davs were the 6th. 7th, Oth, 10th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 23rd and 24th. No building permits were issued by the Borough Council during last month. The installation of Mr. J. W. McMillan as Mayor of Stratford for his third term will take place in the Borough Council Chambers on Wednesday night. Mr. J. S. B. Rowe, bailiff at the Stratford Magistrate’s Court, will retire from the Public Service on May 10, after over twenty-five years’ service. Mr. Rowe was appointed to Stratford six years ago, having been bailiff at the Auckland Magistrate’s Court for several years prior to that date. During, his stay in Stratford Mr. Rowe has been prominently connected with the Stratford Bowling Chib, and later the Avon Club, having on one occasion won the championship of the Stratford Club. He was also a very active member of the Anzac Minstrels, who raised £483 for the soldiers during the war, and his services in this connection will not readily be forgotten. It is Mr. and Mrs. Rowe’s intention, on leaving Stratford, to reside again in Auckland, and it is understood that a social function will be held in their honor during next week. Mr. Rowe’s duties in Stratford will be carried on by Mr. O. S. Harvey, who has alre?.dy arrived. Mr. Harvey is a young man, and has served in France and Germany during the war. He joined the Public Service in 1910, and went to the front in 1916. He was badly gassed, and has just come out of hospital, after eight months’ treatment.

Mr. J. W. Boon, who has been confined to his home for some time, owing tb an acute attack of influenza, is expected to be about again in a few davs’ time.
